SHIPPING DELAYED
STOPPAGE OF WORK AT WELLINGTON (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, 19th December. Work on the Wellington waterfront was interrupted 'yesterday afternoon, owing to a difference between workers and employers on the question of payment on the King’s Birthday last Monday. The matter was stated last night to have been settled in the meantime, and work will go on as usual tins morning. Sailings of several ships were delayed however, and in view of the rush of overseas shipping using the port over Christmas, and the pressing of work during the last few days, the delay was particularly inopportune. A Wellington Harbour Board official told ‘The Dominion” last night that, following a conference yesterday afternoon to discuss the matter, an agreement had been arrived at and there was r.o likelihood of a recurrence of the trouble to-day; The hold-up was due to the fact that the men did not agree with certain steps taken by the shipping companies, and, without waiting for an official decision, some of the men had knocked off work.
