MARY ANN LANE
COUNCIL’S DECISION ON NAME OF STREET SERVICES OF FORMER PILOT’S WIFE RECALLED The Nelson City Council at last night’s meeting decided to give the name of Mary Ann Lane to the stieet connecting the upper and lower portions of Richardson street. At the last meeting of the Council it was decided to communicate with property owners adjoining the street, asking for suggestions for the name. Replies from Miss F. A. Richmond, Messrs G. B. Richardson, J. G. Ingram, and C. H. Broad favoured Mary Ann Lane, while a letter from Messrs E. B. and P. Mocre suggested Stafford street, after the late Sir E. W. Stafford. . , Mr Richardson, of Picton, wrote expressing the sincere hope that the street would be named Mary Ann, as Richardson street was formerly named Mary Ann street after Mrs Cross, wife of Pilot Cross, who T\as a good friend to many of the women who landed in Nelson in the early days. The writer’s mother had often spoken of many kindnesses at the hands of Mrs Cross when she landed in Nelson in 1851. Councillor H. Hurst’s suggestion that Stafford street be held in mind for some future new street, was agreed to. •<
