RACING AND BETTING
—— POSITION IN DOMINION INQUIRY COMMISSION NEEDED (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, This Day. The opinion that there would have 1 to be a reconstruction of the racing position in New Zealand and that a commission should be set up at an early date to inquire into the ramifications of racing and betting, was made by the Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, this morning, replying to a request by the Maramarua Hunt Club for a totalisator permit. The Minister said he had no power to interfere with the allocation of permits which was the concern of the Racing Conference. He was strongly of the opinion that hunt clubs should be cupportad. He attributed the shortage of farm laboui in a measure to farmers’ sons leaving the land because of the concentration of sport in the cities. He added that one of the objects of the Commission would be to ascertain the amount of money that left the Dominion for investment in sweeps.
