WINTRY SPELL YESTERDAY PREDICTED TO BE FINE AND COOL The weather is forecast to be fine, with cool temperatures, but rising. After the hottest day of the summer on Wednesday, yesterday turned cloudy and cool, the maximum temperature being only GO.B degrees, and cold rain commenced to fall in the afternoon, developing into a heavy shower in the evening. Conditions were more like winter than midsummer, and the. effect was heightened by a fall of snow on the Maungatapu. A snow storm was experienced at Lake Rotoiti, and hail fell at Brightwater yesterday afternoon. The rainfall recorded at the Cawthron Institute was ,29in, making the total for the year 40.85 in; while at Atawhai ,33in was recorded, bringing the total for the month to date .42in, and for the year 41.32 in. The Government Research Orchard recorded ,28in. A cold night followed, and in Nelson the temperature fell to 31.4 degrees, a little below frost level, and at the Government Research Orchard it dropped to the unusually low point of 29.4 degrees. To-day was fine and sunny, but still cool.
In Auckland yesterday a few showers fell, and in Wellington though the day was fine a keen southerly prevailed. A boisterous south-westerly blew in Christchurch, and a light shower fell in the evening. Dunedin experienced heavy showers in the morning, and the day was cold.
