MAN ON CHARGE OF FALSE PRETENCES (United Press Association) DUNEDIN, 17th December. Allegations that a widow was defrauded of £139 by a man she had met through a matrimonial advertisement, and to whom she had become engaged, and that at the same time the man was engaged to a young woman to whom he gave a ring lent to him by the widow, were made in court when William George Thomas, 43 pleaded not guilty to charges of escaping from lawful custody in person, and to false pretences.
