STORM IN A TEACUP

(To The Editor) Sir, —I was very pleased to see your article under the above heading in last night’s “Mail,” which shows that your reporter has the strength of his own convictions and was not afraid to report a true record of the Progress League’s tirade against the Town Board. The League, by the way, seems to have the words progress ■ and vindictiveness slightly mixed, because ever since its formation the League, at least its executive, have been gasping for something to heave at the Town Board. Perhaps he does not realise that those who are members of the Town Board, are men who have offered and are giving their time and services in an honest endeavour to help in the betterment of the district. I think it is safe to say that, never since the inception of the Town Board, has there been so much petty bitterness against the Board as there has been since the last Town Board election. The reason is fairly obvious, when it is known that the Board’s business at its ordinary meetings is discussed more than fully with street corner orators and the relief workers. As a listener only at the meeting on Tuesday evening it was pleasing to see that the chairman of the Town Board did not deem it necessary to enter into the petty discussion, but was able to hold his own and what little is left of the Town Board’s dignity. Everyone welcomes progress but before progress in Tahunanui can be achieved the Progress League would be well advised to cut out its criticism of the Town Board, and then perhaps we will get something worth while done. I am not in agreement with the word “filthy” so greatly taken exception to nor am I acquainted with Asiatic countries, but I do feel certain that the Town Board would not have complained unnecessarily, and I presume the Board is also capable of doing its own wingclipping without Mr Blake’s help.— I am Otc. REAL PROGRESS. Nelson, 26th November.
