Instructing a class in English, a teacher said to a small boy named Brown “James, write on the board: ‘Richard can ride the mule if he wants to.’ Now,” continued the teacher, when Jimmy had finished writing, “can you find a better form for the sentence?” “Yes, ma’am, I think I can,” was the prompt answer. “ ‘Richard can ride the mule if the mule wants him to.’ ”
When she married, a young woman was given a separate banking account by her husband. Weeks later, on his return from work the husband made his usual inauiry: “Well, darling, any letters?” “Yes, dear, I had a note from the bank saying that I was four pounds overdrawn. Do remind me to send them a cheque for it to-night.”
