THE NATIONAL ART GALLERY
NELSON WELL REPRESENTED
NEW ZEALAND ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS ANNUAL EXHIBITION
The fact that Nelson artists have fourteen pictures hung in the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts annual exhibition which is being held in connection with the opening of the National Art Gallery is very gratifying. Not only is Nelson represented in watercolours and oils, but some very good craftwork is also displayed. Miss Enga Washbourn is to be commended on the excellent achievement of having six landscapes accepted, while Mr R. J. Waghorn has four pleasing watercolours on view. A watercolour "After the Rain, Marlborough,” by Alan Elliott demonstrates good qualities. The picture has a simple foreground with passing clouds well executed. An “Otago Landscape,” by W. 11. Allen, A.R.C.A. (London), is an oil, Post-Impressionist in treatment and of strong appeal. The macrocarpa trees and distant hills are exceptionally well portrayed. The pictures by Miss Enga Washbourn are mainly of landscapes in the Golden Bay district. They are all attractively painted. A “Calm Morning, Tarakohe,” is particularly good. Miss Marjorie Naylor is represented by a well-executed watercolour, “The Old Butts, Early Morning.” Qn interesting portrayal of an unusual subject is found in Miss B. D. Gerard’s “Limestone Quarry, Onekaka.”
Miss A. M. Davies has exhibited two clear and finely executed linocuts of pleasing design. In the craftwork section of the exhibition the enamels by Miss G. A. Bisley and Mesdames. Dora Gilbert and B. L. Everett are cleverly worked and compare favourably with similar exhibits from other centres.
