HARRIER NOTES

THE NELSON CLUB ENJOYABLE WEEKLY RUN Last Saturday less than half the club membership turned out for the weekly run. The poor muster was undoubtedly a result of the adverse weather conditions, coupled with the strong counter-attraction provided by the representative fpotball match. Apparently the short life of the club (only two years) has not been enough to inculcate in its members the hardy spirit of the true harrier, who runs regardless of weather conditions. Further south where the sport has long been established, and where such a salubrious climate as Nelson’s is not enjoyed, it is no uncommon thing to see the cross-country men out in the worst of weathers. It is a distinct advantage that the harrier can still turn out for his weekly run even when all other outdoor sports have been postponed, and, with this in mind, it is hoped that the local harriers will not again permit the u’eather to interfere with the enjoyment of their sport, for they have yet to experience that exhilarating, care-free feeling engendered by splashing along in the pouring rain.

On Saturday the trail laid by F. Carpenter and K. Ross, provided a good run, enjoyed by the skeleton pack. Commencing at Mount street, it reached Bishopdale by way of Victory Square, St. Vincent street and the foot of Observatory Hill, and circled back to the starting point via Waimea road , Endeavour street, Brook stream Alton street. Nile street and Kawai street. The “run-in” resulted in another win for S. McArthur, whose consistent placings have given him a good lead in points for the “run-in” trophy. L. Hutson and D. Kilpatrick were second and third. At the conclusion of the run members were the guests of Mr and Mrs C. W. Ross, of Mount street. This week’s run will be held from St. Mary’s Hall, Manuka street, at 2.45 p.m.
