NELSON TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

TIIE JUNE MEETING The Nelson Townswomen’s Guild had a very large attendance at their June meeting, the motto for which was “Much is done by making a beginning.” The president, Mrs G. Page, welcomed new members, this month there being the very encouraging number of thirty-two. After the necessary business was transacted, arrangements were made to hold a social afternoon on 26th June at the Mayfair Rooms in aid of the Plunket Society’s funds, and all members and friends were invited to be present. Several ladies also volunteered to represent the Guild and assist the Plunket Society with their street collection. Plans were discussed for a card evening and it was decided to hold a bridge and 500 evening at the Mayfair Rooms on Ist July, when it was hoped there would be a large attendance. The leader of the Playreading Circle explained that as the next Circle meeting fell on the King’s Birthday it had been decided to hold it on 24th June instead, and she issued a cordial invitation to Guild members to be present when the Circle intended to read the popular threeact comedy by J. B. Fagen, entitled, “And so to Bed.” Suggestions were received for a book exchange and one lady offered to take charge of this when it was ready. An amusing one-act play, The Flying Grandmother,” was read by members of the Playreading Circle, after which afternoon tea was served by the following hostesses: Mesdames N. Watson, Brunt, Anderson, F. and W. Martin, Stringer and Champtaloup. The talk for the afternoon was contributed by Major Dagger on “The Sterilisation of the Unfit,” and he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his very interesting address. The results of the competitions were as follows: , _ . _ Gloves: Mrs Inwood 1, Mrs Brunt 2. Plate of scones: Mrs Carruthers 1, Mrs Ching 3. , , , Dr. Low kindly consented to address the next meeting on “Health.” The competitions then will be: (1) Darned sock, (2) fancy biscuits. During the month the Handicraft Circle held their annual meeting, when a splendid report was presented which included the following in the year’s work: 160 pairs of moccasins. 59 pairs of gloves, 35 raffia trays and cake baskets and 9 dress forms. The Circle’s appreciation of the work of their leader, Mrs Plumridge was voiced by Mrs Page as she presented her with a pretty brown and orange vase. Miss Fleming, the Circle secretary, was also the recipient of a small gift. In addition to the above . work Circle members- : are now doing pewter work and Italian quilting. rrrs Monerieff’s recent talk to the Civic Circle was much appreciated and she was heartily thanked by all.
