MAJOR WHO LIVES IN A LINER

Major W. E. Long, formerly of the Queen’s Own Hussars, spends his retirement travelling to and from Australia in a liner. He has completed 50,000 miles in the last seven months. He is so pleased with his experiences that he is determined to continue in the ship as his home. Last August Major Long booked his passage for three consecutive trips to Australia and back. He arranged to have the same cabin, and he furnished it with his own pictures, bureau and chairs.

“I should have booked the cabin for ever, but the company would not take a booking for so long a period,” he said. “In my view it is the only life for a man who is retired on £4OO a year. It is pathetic to see '.no number of retired men with that amount of money who spend their lives in stagnation. I never weary of the sea. At every port I have played golf, but every night I have slept on board. I hope to go on living in the liner until I die or until the ship is broken up.”
