DEAD SEA NOT DEAD

The familiar Dead Sea is coming to life in an industrial sense. The great chemical industry springing up on its shores is now producing some 25,000 tons of potash every year, with a prospect of expansion to 100,000 tons. Bromine, entering the sea from the hot springs of Herod’s Bath, is being extracted at the rate of 1,000 tons a year. The salt-yielding capacity is calculated at forty thousand million tons. The Dead Sea receives daily 8,800,000 cubic metres of water from the River Jordan and the Judean Hills.
