Dr. Temple. Archbishop of York, lecturing in London on “Christian Ethics,” said: “When my old uncle was removed to Berlin from the St. Petersburg Embassy, he left behind the reputation for an ability to deceive the Russians more uniformly and continuously than any predecessor. On arrival in Berlin he was asked the secret of his success. His reply was, ‘By telling them the truth all the time so that I was never believed.’ ”
