TAKAKA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE SECOND BIRTHDAY (From Our Own Correspondent) Many members, visitors, and friends gathered at Everybody’s Theatre, Takaka, on the occasion of the second birthday celebrations of the local Women’s Institute. Social games and items constituted the earlier portion of the afternoon’s programme,,a competition arranged by Mrs Kemble was won by Mrs Price of the Pohara' Institute, whilst the consolation prize went to Mrs U. J. Baniett, of the same branch. The monthly competition, on this occasion for covering a lampshade, was won by Mrs E.rPolglase. A shade which was subsequently rallied was won by Mrs EiC., Baigent. Immediately been dispensed Mrs president, on behalf of the branch&made to Mrs K. Feary a presentation, to mark the occasion of her recent marriage, wishing her every good fortune in the future. Mrs Feary, in a neat speech in reply, thanked the members most sincerely .for their good wishes and for the gift they had given her.

When it came time, to cut the birthday cake, Mrs J. G. Page, being the oldest member in the Takaka Institute, was called upon to light the candles whilst her grand-daughter, Miss Brough, who is the youngest member, was asked to.blow them out —a fitting ceremony illustrating that the younger ladies are fully prepared to take up the reins of service when they are dropped by the older ones. Toasts honoured included the following:—The King, Mrs Curnow, followed by the singing of the National Anthem: Visitors, Mrs Windle, replied to by Mrs Parkes of Motupipi; Absent Friends, Mrs Cottier, replied to on behalf of those unable to be present by Mrs U. J. Bartlett; the Women’s Institute Movement, Mrs S. Taylor; the Press, Mrs J. Stent; and last but not least, the Takaka Women’s Institute, which was proposed by Mrs J. J. Casey of Rockville, and replied to by the Takaka president, Mrs* Curnow. A particularly delightful feature during the afternoon was a little song sung by a kindergarten scholar—the niece of Mrs U. J. Bartlett, of Motupipi—who charmed all present with ner effective presentation of the piece. The afternoon was a splendid success in every way and, if any criterion, augurs well for the future of the branch. | TAKAKA MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB Increasing interest is being shown in the activities of the Takaka Miniature Rifle Club.
