BODY IN WARDROBE

The woman occupant of a residence in Clarence street, close to the Sydney Harbour bridge, made a grim discovery this afternoon when she called a locksmith to open a wardrobe in an upstairs flat. She was confronted with the body of a woman who had apparently been strangled about a week j ago. | The body is being examined to-night ! at the city morgue. ) Detectives were quickly on the scene, but did not touch the body until J a close examination had been made by the Governemnt pathologist, Dr. Sheldon, who discovered a strong' cord I strained tightly round the dead woman’s throat, sufficient in itself to cause death. He also noticed injuries i to her head from which it would ap- | pear that the victim was first rendered insensible with a heavy instrument and then strangled. The victim was I about 35 years of age. The keeper of i the fiats told the police that a man oc- | cupied the fiat until about a week ago, j when he disappeared with the keys, including one for the wardrobe. The I dead woman was a complete stranger !to the other occupants. Police are 1 making every effort to locate the man. I The woman was fully dressed and : in a huddled position on her back. ! There was a severe wound. in her , forehead. So far she has not been j identified. The identity of the man is also unknown, but a description of the pair is being circulated to all police. VICTIM IDENTIFIED (Received 20th June, 2.0 p.m.) SYDNEY. This Day. Tiie wardrobe victim was identified as Mabel Patricia Goodman, aged 36, a single woman, formerly employed as a waitress.
