STOKE BRANCH , ’.-nr.-:-BIRTHDAY PARTY AND BALL

A large crowd of members and their friends attended the second birthday party of the Stoke branch of the Women’s Division. Mrs Robinson, president opened the meeting by, asking all those present to stand and read the Women's Creed. Apologies were received from Mcsdames Childs, Hay, Manson. Marshall and Trask of Stoke, from the following presidents of the Division —Mrs Corder, Wakapuaka; Mrs Knowles. Pangatotara: Mrs Schroeder. Rai Valley; Mrs Haining, Tasman-Mariri; Mrs Ross. Mapua: Mrs Beuke, Moutere; Mrs Taylor, Motueka; Mrs Ryder, R-iwaka; Mrs Hole, Motupiko; from Mrs Goodman of Richmond Women’s Institute and from Mesdames Jaques and Lock, of Nelson. The birthday cake, decorated in blue and gold, the branch colours, was

cut by Miss J. Stewart, of Nelson Girls’ College, who spoke eulogistically of the work of the Women’s Division throughout New Zealand. Miss Stewart was presented with a bouquet of violets, while Mrs Robinson, president and Mrs Hodge, secretary were given shoulder sprays of blue and gold (lowers. The candles were lighted by Mrs East of Wakapuaka, the oldest branch in the district and were blown out by Mrs Sinclair, of Waimea

West, who represented (he youngest formed branch. Both Mrs East and

Mrs Sinclair wished the Stoke branch success and prosperity. The following Women’s Division presidents then spoke on behalf of

their respective branches and extended birthday greetings: Mrs A. V. For-

syth, Nelson Provincial Executive Mrs Hildyard. vice-president of Nelson Provincial Executive and president of Waimea branch; Mrs Brown, Redwoods’ Valley: Mrs Woods. Rich-

mond; Mrs Fell, Hiwipango; Mrs Wil-

kinson, Wakefield. The Mayoress of Nelson, Mrs Page and Mrs Plumridge spoke on behalf of the Townswomen’s Guild. Mesdames Day, Tahuna; Davies, Stoke-Wakatu; Chaytor. Wakefield and Miss Worley, Hope-Ranzau spoke on behalf of the Women’s Institute. A musical programme arranged by Mrs Claughton was much appreciated. Items were given by Mrs Vaughan, violin solo; Miss Frussing, song with violin obligato (Mrs Vaughan); Mrs Claughton. song. Mrs Vining was the accompanist. ' Afternoon tea, provided by all mcml bers was served by the committee and younger members who acted as hostesses for the afternoon, j Mrs Tyreman gave a prize for a gucSsing competition and it was won by Mrs Forsyth. i The following week a most successful ball was held to raise funos for the year’s work. Mrs Robinson, president end Mesdames Campbell, Clegg and Rogers, vice-presidents were hostesses, while the committee and members were in charge of the ; supper arrangements. Mr S. F. Morris acted as M.C. Music was supplied by ■ Mr Harold Williams’s dance orchestra.

| Prizes for Monte Carlo dances were j won by Mr and Mrs K. Hockey and by Miss Bailey and partner. The large crowd present spent a most enjoyable evening. The members of the Women’s Division wish to thank all those who, by work or by donations of money and goods and by loan of crockery for the party and dance, helped to make both functions successful, both from the social and financial points of view. DOVEDALE BRANCH At the monthly meeting of the Dovedale branch of the W.D.F.U., there was a fair attendance of members, presided over by Mrs P. Jordan, president. The delegates to the provincial executive gave a report on the meeting held in Nelson. It was decided to run a scries of euchre parties during the winter months to help augment the funds. A number of warm garments were handed in to be dispatched to Nelson. A presentation of a supper set with cups and saucers, was made to Mrs W. Burnett, who had had the misfortune to Jiavc her home destroyed by fire.

Mrs A. Silcock was elected to the committee in place of Mrs M. Cozens, who has left the district. Mrs Cozens had previously been entertained at an afternoon tea and presented with a pair of pretty vases. There was a good entry for the (lower competition, Mrs N. A. Win gaining first place and Mrs Fowler second. The potatoe growing competition resulted: Mrs A. Silcock (25tlbs) 1; Mrs P. Jordan 2.
