RUGBY FOOTBALL
OWEN V. WAIMEA JUNIORS LATTER WIN G-5 Played at Owen in unpleasant weather conditions with a greasy ball and a wet ground, the Owen v. Waimea Juniors Rugby fixture provided an exciting second half. Owing to a late start only two thirties were played, and after a ragged first half some sparkling football was seen by the Waimea backs who flung the ball about in fine style. Shortly after the commencement a bustling movement down the far wing saw McGregor, Waimea’s speedy winger, go over in the corner, Waimea 3-0. The game raged all over the field in dribbling rushes mostly, the greasy ball being difficult to handle, but although Owen had several opportunities of equalising from penalties, Baigent failed and they changed over with Waimea still three points to the good. Owen resorted to dribbling rushes in the second half but were driven back time and again by the Waimea custodian, Lang. Yelverton made some great openings for Owen and Burns was good on defence. The Waimea forwards, led by Day, hunted in a pack and their bustling tactics wore down the opposition, but they failed to get there. Owen held a two point lead when a dribbling rush saw play go into Waimea territory and some hard rucking took place near the line, Bint diving over after some great work in the tight. Baigent, from well out, added the major points. Owen 5-3." Waimea threw the leather about in ! fine style. O’Connor made some jinky I runs and Day was going great guns lin the forwards. Fowler at half was using a useful boot and the forwards were taking every advantage of it. The winning try came when Lang, who proving the cleverest back on the ground followed up fast, bustled Pitman, and scored a well deserved try. The kick failed. Waimea G-5. Owen made frantic efforts to make up the leeway but were driven back j by Lang and the final whistle went without further score. Mr A. Croucher (Nelson) held the | whistle and gave every satisfaction.
