BASKETBAĹ NOTES

(By Tenth Player) SATURDAY’S GAMES On Saturday the selectors were busy watching out for outstanding players for the representative team. Judging from the general standards of play quite a strong team will be fielded. Unfortunately the representative team will be unable to travel to Blenheim on 23rd June owing to Blenheim’s previous arrangements. A date for the match has yet to be arranged between the two associations. Arrangements are well in hand for the King’s Birthday tournament, which will be held this year, in the morning. Names of teams intending entering for the above tournament must be handed in to the secretary not later than Saturday. The tournament commences at 9 a.m. sharp, all players are requested to be on time at the Central School Courts. Y.M.C.A. had a decisive win from Tahuna by 24 goals to 5. The Y.M.C.A. defence gave Tahuna few opportunities of nearing their goal. In the second half, the Tahuna defence used their height to more advantage. Miss C. Willis refereed. McKenzies had very little opposition in their match against Rivals, whom they defeated by 17 goals to 7. The Rival defence found the McKcnzie forwards too fast. The Rival team | did not show the anticipation of the \ passing shown by the McKenzie girls, j Miss J. Currin refereed. Lack of combination was very I noticeable in the’United team, in their match against Convent O.G. Jean ! Currin in the Convent O.G.’s centre was outstanding for her defensive and attacking movements. The Convent girls have proved that short quick passes are the best, each player in a base, handling the ball at least once, before passing it into the next base. The final score was Convent O.G. 12, United 2. Mr Sanders refereed. College O.G.’s by more accurate goal throwing just managed to defeat Albion. Play was concentrated to the centre base, where M. Wriggley (Albion) was conspicuous for her good play. The College centres did not play' their usual good game, leaving their opponents undefended on several occasions. J. Dobson played a steady game in the College defence. The final score was College O.G. 15, Albion 14. Mr C. Williams refereed. Convent, playing: their usual good game, had no* difficulty in defeating Rangers by 20 goals to 1. If Rangers played an attacking instead of defensive game, their forwards would have more opportunities of showing their ability. Mr C. Williams refereed. Ngaruawahia and Sprance (two new teams) spoilt their match by bunchy play, particularly in the centre base where they seemed to think that snatching the ball was the only way of taking possession of it from their opponents. N. Tyerman (Ngaruawahia) by playing an open game did well in the centre base, Sprance’s chief defence, J. Dickson, played a splendid game, but unforunately was not backed up by the other two defence. Ngaruawahia were the winners by 15 goals to 12. Miss Z. Chennells refereed.
