SLIPS IN MANAWATU
TRAIN HELD UP HEAVY RAIN IN DISTRICT " (By Telegraph—Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH This Day. 4 Two small slips and one large slip which came down North of Mangaweka early this morning, caused a delay of over three hours to the southbound Limited express. The train was held,, up at Taihape from 4 till 7 a.m., till the line was clear. The south-bound airliner was delayed At Milson to enable passengers by the Limited to join. Following heavy rain in Hawkes Bay, the. Manawatu River rose rapidly overnight from the comparatively low winter level of 2ft to 14ft 9in and by 11 o’clock to-day it was threatening to inundate all the low-lying land in the vicinity of Tiakitahuna and Rangiotu, which is the area which suffered extensively in the past floods. With the river continuing to rise it may go across country and make the main Palmerston NorthFoxton highway impassable.
