LEGALITY QUESTIONED
TIMARU MAYORALTY (United Press Association) TIMARU, 15th June. Mr Percy Cornelius Vinnell was this evening, installed as Mayor of Timaru. Following the death of the late Mayor, Mr T. W. Satterthwaite, the Town Clerk as returning officer I called for nominations, two being re- ! ceived. One subsequently withdrew, | and a doubt existed regarding the i legal position, as notice of withdrawal ■. had not been given seven clear days j before the election. The returning | officer consulted the borough solicitors, and later declared Mr Vinnell . elected Mayor unopposed. A special meeting of the council ' was held to-night for the purpose of installing the Mayor. Before signing ,! the declaration, Mr Vinnell stated ’ that as a result of the opinion ex | pressed by the borough solicitors he proposed making the usual declara ’ tion. but would ask the council b l obtain further legal advice.
