SALVATION ARMY APPEAL

(To The Editor) Sir, —Mr Wm. Lock is to be commended for bringing before the notice of the public, by means of your columns, the entirely unnecessary appeal to the charity of citizens of the Salvation Army which is now in circulation in the City. His remarks are very much to the point, and in answer to “Deborah’s” letter it will be seer, that Mr Lock did not in any way decry the work of the Salvation Army, but merely criticised the action of its local officer. I understand the local Relief Committee has been set up, representative of every organisation in the town dispensing help to their less fortunate brothers, and the whole of that committee tacitly undertook to work for the benefit of the whole. Major Brown is not representing the Salvation Army on that committee but the Ministers’ Association and I agree with Mr Lock that his action in forestalling the appeal of that Relief Committee with the knowledge gained as a member of the committee, is not only disloyal tc the committee but also to the Ministers’ Association. Major Brown is at liberty to ask for help for any case of need, from the funds of the Relief Committee, of which very fortunately there appears to be ample, and when there are so many organisations, churches, orphanages, etc., in need of funds it is to say the least of it hardly fitting to make unnecessary appeals to the generous minded. Perhaps Major Brown will also publish the information where the balance sheet of the local Salvation Army activities may be seen.--1 am, etc., “ARISTIDES.” Nelson. 12th June.
