SEQUEL TO ELOPEMENT
PRINCESS AND HOTEL POSTER FORFEITURE OF ALL RIGHTS (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 17th June, 9.20 a.m.) BAGHDAD, 16th June. The sequel to Princess Assa’s elopement is that a decree, signed by the King and members of the Cabinet, is being submitted to Parliament providing that any prince or princess marrying without the King’s consent may be deprived of alt rights, including property, and right of residence in Irak.
A sensation was caused at Athens last month by the elopement and secret marriage of Princess Assa, the eldest sister of the King of Irak, to a hotel porter. Desperate efforts Ijy the family to annul the marriage v/ere unsuccessful. The Princess, who is aged 30, arrived at Athens with her sister Ra.iihah. She was secretly baptised in the rites of the Greek Orthodox Church in the name of Anastassia. She then disappeared from the hotel, a porter, Anastassios Charalambi, aged 25, vanishing simultaneously. When the marriage was revealed, Rajihah called in the police, but they were powerless. Princess Assa, in a statement, said: “I will not have anything to do with my relatives. I love my husband.” The romance began at Rhodes two years ago.
