ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

PETER DAWSON CUP DULLER RETAIN TROPHY NELSON’S STRONG CHALLENGE (Special to “Mail”) WESTPORT, This Day. The first Association Football representative match played in Westport for some years took place on Saturday on Victoria Square when Euller withstood a strong challenge from Nelson for the Peter Dawson Cup by three goals to one. The fairly large crowd present enjoyed a bright and keenly contested game with both sides turning on some brilliant patches. Considering their long trip the previous night the visitors did remarkably well and the scores hardly did them full justice. In the first spell, playing against a strong wind, Buller more than held their own. and in the second half they carried on to a good win. Win they did but only after a hard battle and although the holders of the trophy scored three goals in this half to Nelson’s one, this was no true indicr% : on of the run of play. The challengers in fact, played better against the wind than with it, in the first - stages. The teams were as follows: BULLER (Holders) N. Archibald S. Anderson, W. White. V. Brown,| G. Orman, T. Blythe, J. Blythe. G. Newman, H. Twamley, C. Orman, T. White. NELSON (Challengers) A. Smith J. Coxhill, H. Mansell, B. Hurst (c.), A. Campbell, T. Bunster, A. Du Feu, D. Scott, W. McGinty, J. Du Feu, O. Du Feu. Mr Wardrope, of Denniston, was referee. THE PLAY Buller were the first to score when Twamley, the centre forward, sent the ball just under the bar, T. Blythe going in to make sure. Nelson played up after this .and were definitely superior for a long period, during which the Buller supporters had a most anxious time. Their forwards came time and again and finally their efforts were rewarded when O. Du Feu got one past Archibald with a great shot. Nelson kept up the pressure for a time with Scott and McGinty very dangerous, but they slackened off in their endeavours, and the Buller front line took a hand on attack, for C. Orman to put his team in the lead. Towards the finish the Buller outside right. T. White, made certain of the Cup remaining in Westport when he found the net with a fine shot. The game was played in a most friendly manner and should help to repopularise the Association code in the Buller. The forward play of both sides was excellent, with Buller perhaps the more finished combination. J. Blythe, outside left, H. Twamley, centre-for-ward and C. Orman, inside right, were the most dangerous, the former’s footwork being very clever. The former Buller men, McGinty and Scott, showed that they have not lost any of their dash and both showed speed and initiative on attack, receiving good support from O. Du Feu, whose goal was a richly deserved one. The Buller half-line was overshadowed by the visitors, as a line, but individually T. Blythe played an impressive game. Campbell, the Nelson centre-half, ranks with “Sandy” Anderson, the Buller back, as being the best on the ground. He used a hefty and well-judged kick to advantage. Hurst and Burster were very much on their game, while not rising to the brililant heights attained by Campbell. Mansell was the best of the challengers’ full-backs, while A. Smith, the goal-keeper, gave a magnificent display, repelling attack after attack in no uncertain manner. His vis a vis Ned Archibald, the Buller custodian also covered himself with glory and in the second half especially he did very well to survive the heavy ordeal which he went through. Sandy Anderson, the Buller skipper, was on his mettle as left full-back, hiS exhibition being a most brililant one. White, the other back, also defended well. TROPHY PRESENTED At the conclusion of the game Mr W. T. Slee presented the trophy to Anderson, the Buller contain, and commented on the fine display by both sides. Mr A. E. Coxhill replied on behalf of the Nelson team, stating that they would be down for a challenge next year. _
