THE MONTHLY MEETING YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS A SURVEY MATTER Further business was transacted by the Waimea County Council yesterday when 45 letters were dealt with. The Main Highways Board, Nelson, wrote declining to undertake an engineering survey of the ApplebyMapua Main Highway. The Council has discussed proposed widening and improvements of the road. The obligation lay with the Council, the letter stated, and the Department had not the necessary staff even if it were so disposed, to do the work. Councillor R. Teece took exception to the letter stating that the authorities had surveyed other parts such as the Takaka Hill etc.

The chairman, Councillor J. Corder, considered that they should still agitate in the matter. Councillor L. Palmer thought that they should not accept the statement as works of a similar nature had been surveyed. The chairman said that it was a matter that might be put before the Minister when he visited Nelson. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, Councillor Palmer and Councillor Manson. The Department of Labour, Nelson, wrote regarding subsidy for Relief i Workers, Rabbit Island Plantation; and stated that an increase in the maintenance subsidy would be granted provided that the Council find 35s per man week; bringing the men’s wages to £4 for 40 hours a week. The Department of Labour, Wellington, wrote regarding increased pay to workers under No. 5 Scheme. Councillor Everett said they should point out that it would take another £IOOO and the Council could not do it. The Council would do well to devote a little more time to the matter before taking any step. He moved and it was carried that a copy of the correspondence be sent to each mem- | ber and a final decision be arrived at ! at the next meeting, i The National Federation of General Labour and retailed Trades wrote proposing an agreement with County Councils relative to wages, hours and Working conditions. • Essential points in the agreement proposed, were a weekly rate of £4 10s for a 40 hours week, to be worked between the hours of 7.30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on five days a week from Monday to Friday; double time for overtime and treble time for Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The letter is to be forwarded to the Counties Association. The Tauranga County Council, asked the Council to support the proposal that if County Council employees are obliged to belong to a Union it should be one distinct from any other Union of Workers. The chairman commented that the Council could heartily endorse the proposal and should forward it on to the Counties Executive. It was decided to follow this course. The Nelson Harbour Board, notified that the various local bodies will be required to collect the harbour rates commencing with the year 1937-38. It was resolved to assess the charge at 5 per cent. The Motueka Borough Council, wrote regarding adjustment of assets and liabilities. It was resolved that a delegation consisting of the mover, the chairman and the clerk be appointed to represent the county in its controversy with the Motueka Borough in respect to the adjustment owing to the merging of part of the Borough in the County; and that the Borough be asked to meet the Council. The Secretary Spring Grove Cemetery expressed appreciation of work done by Council in the Cemetery, survey and laying out. The Secretary, Spring Grove Cemetery, forwarded the name of Mr H. E. Higgins to be added to Spring Grove Cemetery Trustees. Mr Higgins was appointed. The State Forest Service wrote regarding Reay’s Valley Stream, Golden Downs Road, and asking Council to provide five beech stringers towards the cost of the work. The request was acceded to.

The Tadmor Branch of the New Zealand Farmers’*Union, wrote asking for Tadmor Hill road to be put in a better state of repair. The Council endorsed remarks about the Tapawera bridge, on which the decking was dilapidated. Another application is to be made to the Railway Department. The writers are to be notified that ordinary maintenance will be carried out on the Tadmor Hill. The Korere-Motupiko Branch of the Farmers’ Union, asked for the surface of the road between Motupiko Railway Station and Korere Bridge to be improved. Councillor Gibbs referred to the large amount of traffic on the road, which in places was very narrow. He moved that the engineer report as to scarifying the road. Councillor Higgins supported and the motion was adopted. The Hills Fruitgrowers’ Association, wrote protesting against the Council making donations to charitable organisations. The letter was received.
