POLICY MEASURES

GOVERNMENT’S PROGRAMME

IMPORTANT STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER

(From "The Mail's" Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, This Day. An important statement regarding future policy measures of the Government was made in the House of Representatives last evening by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage), who also stated that the session of Parliament would resume on 21st July next. “During the recess,” said the Prime Minister, “it is the intention of the Government to prepare legislation providing for:— 1. The readjustment of mortgages. 2. The restoration of wage cuts to date from Ist July. 3. The restoration of Public Service salary cuts to date from Ist July and 4. The increase of pensions, and the payment of pensions to invalids to date from Ist July. “In addition, it is intended (a) to make preparation through the Labour Department for the organisation of farm labour under reasonable conditions and at fair rates of pay; (b) to speed up a building programme, including housing and public buildings; (3) to speed up other public works of national importance; and (d) to prepare the Budget for presentation as early as possible after the House reassembles.

“It is further intended during the recess to take'whatever steps may be necessary to prevent unfair rises of prices in order that the people may not be exploited. Every effort will also be made to advance the establishment of new industries; and during the next part of the session a Bill will be introduced for the purpose of assisting industry generally to secure greater efficiency and co-ordination, thus enabling it to compete fairly with overseas products.”
