BETTER SERVICE

INCREASED RATES OF PAY PLACEMENT OF UNEMPLOYED SCHEME IN OPERATION The Government’s new scheme for restoring unemployed men to occupations at standard rates of pay is now in operation in the district and since the scheme began about 12 men have been placed. The idea of the plan is not to unduly harass the employed but to acquire his co-operation in finding situations for the men. Mr T. W. Guy is the local placement officer and interviews the employers, and a system of employment index cards enables the officer to confidently recommend the employee, having thus obtained the fullest information concerning him. The hope is expressed that all employers will get in touch with the placement officer when workmen are required. Mr B. Bell, certifying officer, today pointed out that the Unemployment Board were laying down new rates of pay to operate on Ist June' next, being a big increase on those in force previously, and the officerexpressed the hope that the men would show by their interest and application to their work that they appreciated what the new Government were doing for them, and would be willing to do their share and render better service. The increase in pay varies from 9s to 12s per week according to the various grades. The scheme makes a material advance in, efforts to secure placement: of .registered unemployed, including those who are registered but not actually in receipt of relief, and, in particular, sedentary workers who. unaided, would experience unusual difficulty in securing placement. The placement officer’s sole desire is to help the men along the way of misfortune to a brighter future in permanent or semi-permanent employment. It is of vital importance that, the goodwill and co-operation of each and every employer should be secured with a view to leading him to immediately associate “man required” with “Government Employment Bureau” and to afford the Bureau the first opportunity of submitting candidates for the vacant position.
