COOK OF TRAWLER DISAPPEARS
SEARCH PROVES FRUITLESS (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, 25th May. When the trawer James Cosgrove was in the Bay of Plenty on Sunday evening the ship’s cook, George Leaden, disappeared and has not been seen since. The disappearance occurred during fine weather when the vessel was about seven miles off Matata, the nearest land. The man was seen sitting on the galley at 6.40 p.m., and shortly afterward he could not be found. The vessel was searched fore and aft, and then she cruised for an hour and a half in the area where she had been when the man was last seen. The search, however, was fruitless, and after it was discontinued the trawler left for Auckland, where the man’s disappearance was reported to the Marine Department and the police. The missing cook was an Englishman, about 40 years of age, and it is understood he was single. He always made his home on board when the vessel was in port.
