OBITUARY

MISS MIRIAM DAVIS At her home, “Koari,” Chapter street, Christchurch, Miss Miriam Blanche Davis died on Saturday morning, and the news of her death will be received with great regret by many friends in Christchurch, where she had lived nearly all her life, says the “Press”. She was a daughter of the late Mr Hyam Davis, and was born in Nelson, where her father was a pioneer who successfully conducted a merchant’s business for many years. The family then moved to Christchurch, where Miss Davis was educated and where she lived ever since. Last winter she suffered a severe illness, but made a good recovery, and, with her sister, Miss T. Davis, afterwards spent several months in Sydney. Six weeks ago she again became indisposed, but her death was unexpected. Miss Davis was a most kindly and charitable woman. It was said that she never refused to help anyone who appealed to her, but her kindly deeds were done so unostentatiously that none but the recipients knew of them. Many poor families will sadly miss the food and clothing ■ and fuel with which She provided them during the winter months, and others, not so poor, will miss the friendship and hospitality of a benign and generoushearted woman. Miss Davis is survived by twp sisters, Mrs H. J. Raphael and Miss T. Davis, and by one brother, Mr L. Davis, all of Christchurch. One brother. Sir Moss Davis, died in London a few years ago, and two other brothers, Mr Mark Davis and Mr J. Davis, well known business men in Christchurch, died within recent years. Mr E. Davis, Mayor of Auckland, and the Hon. Eliot Davis, M.L.C., of Auckland, are nephews. The funeral was very largely attended. The Rabbi, the Rev. S. N. Salas, conducted the- service at the house and at the graveside in the Linwood Cemetery.
