NELSON EDUCATION BOARD

THE MONTHLY MEETING CONCLUDING BUSINESS The following concluding business was transacted by the Nelson Education Board yesterday afternoon:— The Education Department notified that the number of pupils on the Nelson district school rolls as at 31st March last was 6454, an increase of about 500, due to the re-admission of the five-year-olds. The Auckland Point School Committee asked what steps were being taken to reintroduce school milk supply this winter. It was resolved to reply that nothing was being done in anticipation of the Government instituting a national scheme. The Harakeke Committee asked that a travelling dental clinic be established and are to be advised that the subject will be taken up after more urgent matters.

Thirty-two committees failed to elect, it was reported, thus giving definite evidence that the biennial meetings cause loss of interest. The Board fixed Bth June as the date for the second meetings. The Seddonville Committee tendered its resignation, which was accepted, and a fresh meeting of householders is to be called. The Tahunanui Committee requested that its school be included in the Nelson urban area, and the request was granted. The following resignations were accepted:— Mr G. A. Dutton, sole teacher, Inangahua Landing. Mr R. E. Eyles, head teacher, Brightwater. Mr D. Hay, head teacher, Dovedale. Mr H. F. McClune, head teacher, Nelson Central. Mr R. L. Park, sole teacher, Stanley Brook. Miss J. A. Taylor, assistant teacher, Mapua. Mr H. Barltrop moved the following motion, notice of which was given on Ist May, 1936: That the resolution passed by the Board meeting held in Takaka as follows, “That the chairman and secretary be authorised to confer with the Westport Borough Council re the charge for water supplied to the Westport School,” be and the same is hereby rescinded. After a short discussion the motion was withdrawn in favour of a suggestion that the Council be conferred with, and that the Westport Committee make no final settlement without reporting to the Board of the terms.
