ATTACK ON EVEREST
BAFFLING WEATHER CONDITIONS EXPEDITION HELD UP NORTH COL IN DANGEROUS STATE (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) ’ (Received 26th May, 1.5 p.m.) LONDON, 25th May. A copyright message from Mr Hugh Ruttledge, from Camp 3, says: “Since 21st inst. conditions have been extremely baffling. The monsoon arrived at Darjeeling Hills on 23rd inst. and advanced here on 24th inst, when heavy snow fell. Previous snow has never left the mountain, and a gentle wind was not sufficient to remove it. I brought the party to Camp 3 again so as to be ready, but will not invite disaster by a premature advance while the slopes of the North Col are in a dangerous state. Avalanches are now falling. We must hope that the present abnormal monsoon will be succeeded by a period of calmer weather. We are by no means downhearted.”
Another source from Calcutta says the fears that the early monsoon will ruin the changes of success are intensified by reports of almost continuous snow received at the Alipore observatory from the expedition. ~
