HEAVY SNOW

MT. EVEREST EXPEDITION RETURN TO CAMP ONE !UiSit*d Press Association—By Electric Telegraph-Copyright) LONDON, 21st May. A copyright message received from the leader of the Everest expedition, Mr Hugh Rutledge, from Camp 1, states:— -.5 :

“After' careful consideration I decided to bring the whole, party fromCamp 3 hack for a short rest at Camp 1. The recent heavy snow renders the upper slopes of Mount Everest temporary piiclimbable, and/ they are likely to remain- so for. seven.to ten days. Everyone is well except for one or two' sore throats, and we shall all be stronger for a week at the lower altitude. The meteorological department reports that the monsoon is approaching south of the Bay of Bengal. 'Vo are carefully watching Mount Everest, and shall again advance up the glacier when the show shows signs of clearing. I estimate that owing to our good acclimatisation it will be possible to reach the summit in eight days from Camp 1.” b - •/'<
