CABLE AND WIRELESS
EVER=INCREASING COMPETITION OF WIRELESS SERVICES (Received 23rd May, 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, 22nd May Major Id. Denison Pender at the Cable and Wireless annual meeting emphasised ever-increasing competition of wireless services, of which 150 had been established since 1928, chiefly by foreign countries and many at uneconomic rates, for the purpose of fostering foreign trade. For instance Italy had undertaken to subsidise a company for forty years and the Government also specially facilitated the collection of traffic repairs to cables. He added tjiat the gravity of the position was aggravated by continual proposals to inaugurate direct foreign wireless with Empire points where adequate cables exist. Such services frustrated the objects which the cable conference in 1929 endeavoured to attain. Moreover the maintenance of efficient cable was essential in view of imperial defence. He added that the Government refused to convene an imperial cable wireless conference to consider the matter. “Accordingly we requested that ‘communications’ should be included in the agenda at the forth" coming imperial conference.’’
