BOROUGH AFFAIRS

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING OF COUNCIL (From Our Own Correspondent) At the fortnightly meeting of the Motucka Borough Council there were present the Mayor (Mr 1L J. L. York, and Councillors S. F. Hulbert, A. K. Fry, D. Simpson, D. Park and W. F.ginton. An apology for absence was tendered oil behalf of Councillor If. .1. Trewavas. CORRESPONDENCE Mr E. A, Stilwell, caretaker of the Institute Hall, wrote asking that, as he had been ordered to hospital for an indefinite! period. Mrs Stilwell be appointed acting-caretaker in the meantime.

It was resolved, on the motion of the Mayor and Councillor Simpson, that a letter of sympathy be forwarded to Air Stilwell, expressing the hope of a speed}' recovery to normal health and that Mrs Stilwell be appointed actingcaretaker during Mr Stilwell’s absence. It was also decided that Air Stilwell bo 1 granted six months leave of absence, as .caretaker of the Institute Hall, j The Motucka Hockey Association applied for the lease of the cricket 'ground daring the current season and future seasons, The secretary stated jin the letter that the area was at j present unlit for play, and asked, that in the event of the lease being granted, the Council arrange that the grass be mowed. The hockey season would open on the 23rd May and extend to approximately the middle of September. On the motion of the Mayor and j Councillor Fry it was agreed that the i Hockey Association be granted the use j of the cricket ground for the duration lof the hockey season at a rental of ( ! £1(1. the ground to be vacated one month before the commencement of the cricket season. ! Thorp wrote enclosing agreement in duplicate for sub lease of part section to the Women’s Division of the Fanners’ Union and asking that the necessary resolution he passed and both copies sealed as soon as possible. Anderson, reported as follows: “Cutting and cleaning up of the drains in Staples street, Thorp street and Greenwood street ha-s been completed and the drains in High street north and Old Wharf Eoad are being cleaned out. The drain at Hie lower end of Staples street is being dug deeper and wider. Gleaning'up of the aerodrome frontage is taking place, the metal bin lias been taken down .and the timber of same carted to the Council yard and stacked. The grader lias worked College street of the AlotuekaKoliatu main highway and the Elcii-moiid-Collingwood main highway. Staples, Thorp, Tudor, and Wliakarewa streets. Green Lane, Poplar Eoad and Beach Eoad have also been graded. Screened metal—l2s yards lias been carted on to the following streets: Green Lane, 20 yards; Courtney street, 1(1 yards; Wliakarewa street, 35 yards; College street, 32 yards; Staples* street 22 yards.
