EMPIRE DAY

LATE EARL BEATTY'S MESSAGE NOT TO BE READ IN LONDON SCHOOLS DECISION OF COUNTY COUNCIL (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 22nd May, 9.5 a.m.) LONDON. 21st May. Although 15,000 copies were circulated throughout the Empire, the London County Council will not permit the late Earl Beatty’s Empire Day message to be read in its schools. The Council does not give a reason for declining the Empire Day Movement’s offer of supplies. Written shortly before bis dcatli Earl Beatty’s message congratulates the King on his accession, assures him of loyalty, and goes on to say: “Let us celebrate Empire Day in a spirit, of deep thankfulness that we are citizens of a great empire. As an empire we must strive to secure greater tolerance and understanding among the nations; as individuals we must play our part in upholding the traditions of our race.” Two years ago the Council, which has a Socialist majority, decided to change the name of Empire Day to Commonwealth Day.
