SUBSIDY FOR REGIMENTAL BAND

£75 GRANTED BY CITY COUNCIL At the last meeting of the City Council a letter was received from the Regimental Band requesting an increase m the annual subsidy granted the band. The Council decided to hear a deputation from the band and at last night’s meeting Messrs W. Lock and H. Wilkins made representations to the Council. Mr Wilkins said that the band found it could collect little from collections and found it difficult in the circumstances to balance the budget. Details of receipts and expenditure and public performances were "submitted. Mr Lock supplemented the details given by the previous speaker. in answer to Councillor Hurst Mr Wilkins said the band would be agreeable to carry out a definite series ot prearranged public concerts in return for the subsidy, without making collections. The Mayor (Mr G. L. irage) said if such a programme c) concerts was given, the public would feel that it was getting a return and the Council would in those circumstances be justified in granting the subsidy. The Mayor thanked the deputation for attending and said .the Cotmcjil would give consideration to the application. Councillor S. McArthur moved that the band be granted £IOO. He based that figure on the subsidy paid in other places. The band was always willing to help at public functions and he thought the Council should give it £IOO this year. The motion lapsed for want of a seconder. It was decided on the motion of Councillor G. R. Russell that the band be granted a subsidy of £75. on condition that it gives eight organised concerts in the year in addition to attendance at public functions.
