NELSON FERN SOCIETY
THE MONTHLY MEETING AN INFORMATIVE ADDRESS What proved to he one of the best meetings of the Nelson l'ern Society was held in the Institute, when there was a very large attendance of members and I'rieiKls. Members expressed pleasure at seeing Mr W. 11. Bryant, the president, in attendance alter his recent illness. Mr Bryant thanked members for their kind expressions and said he was glad to be wiili them again. He then extended a \eiv cordial welcome to new members anci friends and said lie was sure they would find the meetings instructive and interesting. The president then referred to the resignation of Mr G. Wearing, as secretary. who lie said had been one of the promoters of the society. On asking Mr 'Wearing to accept- a small gilt train members of the society, lie thanked Mr Wearing for what he had done to promote the interests of the society.
Mr Wearing suitably replied. _\i| Jeakings then gave a short talk on the planting of ferns and illustrated his remarks by a practical demonstration. He emphasised the fact that the chief requirement was good drainage. This fact cannot he impressed too much on beginners, as more depends upon the care with which it is performed than upon any subsequent treatment of tlm soil that is used. Anything .like a water-logged state of the soil will eer-
tainly injure, if not kill the plants altogether. The speaker then demonstrated how to prepare a pot and soil for planting and stressed ihe point of having the crown of the fern above the soil. Following Mr .leakings’ talk a general discussion ensued, question and answer bringing out many useful points. The society continues to grow in membership, several additions being made to Urn list. All those interested in ferns are invited to attend the society’s meetings which are held monthly.
