Madame Van der Elst was fined 60s for failing to stop a car when ordered. The other charges were dismissed. Counsel for the defence said that she did not realise the strength of local feeling against Dr. Buck lluxton’s horrible murders, and struck a bad patch there in conducting a propaganda campaign against capital punishment.
Mrs Van der Elst was jeered when she appeared outside the gaol during the execution of Dr. Ruxton, who was hanged for the murder of his wife and maid. Mrs Van der Elst was subsequent, ly charged with a breach of the peace and dangerous driving. Other charges are pending.
