FIRE PREVENTION
DOMINION-WIDE CAMPAIGN NEXT WEEK’S EFFORT REDUCTION IN FIRE LOSSES Next week throughout the Dominion will be Fire Prevention Week, a time now set aside yearly in a concentrated effort to educate the public Tit the matter of fire precaution. “Fires in the home are easier to prevent than to extinguish, and are mostly due to carelessness,” states'the householder’s circular which will be distributed next week.
In Nelsui next week the public are invited to '(vatch Brigade demonstrations shortly alter 5.30 p.m., on Monday at Gould’s earner, on Tuesday at the Panama Hotel corner, and on Wednesday at the Trafalgar Hotel corner. On Thursday at the same time a'team from the old 1918 Brigade is to turn out with the reel, the members of the Brigade being Messrs J. Dayman, It. Dayman, L. Dicksou, I’. Dayman and A. J. Bennett. The 1931 Brigade will follow, and lastly the present Brigade. The various times put up in laying on a lead of water should make interesting comparisons. At various times during the week the fire engines will go out placarded with slogans ; and a distribution of printed matter wli be made through shops factories, and schools.
That improved methods of fire fighting and greater care bv tile public are having their effect is indicated by the following figures for the Dominion- Fire £1,292,094; fire loss, 1934, -566,112. a reduction of £725,982. This reduction has resulted in a reduction in insurance premiums on dwellings and household property of 12£ per cent.
