CHILDREN’S PLAYGROUNDS

IMPROVEMENT WORK NEARLY COMPLETED flood progress is being made with the improvements to the children’s pinygrounds in Waimea and Russell streets. These, together with another ground in Grove street, have been provided by the kindly thought of the late Mr R. B. Jackson who made the necessary provisions for them in his will.

On the Waimea street ground an area of 1000 square yards has been metalled and tarred but as.the surface showed signs of unevenness it was decided to allow the area to consolidate before finally sealing it oil. The bank at the back has been terraced and a pathway connects with Wellington street.

On the Russell street ground, which was purchased from the City Council, the work of levelling is' nearly completed. An area of 2i)(i square yards in the south eastern corner is to be asphalted while the banks are to be trimmed.

The total expenditure to date on improvements to these two ■ grounds is approximately £3OO. This amount however does not include the cost of wages under the No. 5 Scheme which has been refunded by the Unemployment Board.

Work on the third ground will not be commenced until the other two grounds are completed.
