The finding of recruiting posters urging young Irishmen to join the British Army and Navy in the hall of Vice-Ad. miral Somerville's home suggests that the admiral’s interest in the recruiting campaign might have been the motive for the crime. There has recently been nil agitation against recruiting, public bodies protesting against Civic Guards assisting in the selection of recruits.
Vice-Admiral Henry Boyle Townshend Somerville, C..M.0., was born in 1563 and was educated at the ltoval Academy. Gosport, and in TI.M.S. Britannia, lie served in 11.M.5. Shannon during he Chilean-I’eruvian war of 1880 and in 11.M.5. Agincourt in the first Egyptian war of 1832. He later served in various parts of the world. During the war he commanded cruisers in the Northern Atlantic Patrol, was on convoy service between America, and England, and subsequently went to the Admiralty. He retired in 1319, since when he had been employed in the hvdrographie department of the Admiralty, and as chairman of the Admiralty Tidal Committee in 1923. He published a number of works on nautical and other subjects.
