LORD PONSONBY
WAS PAGE TO QUEEN VICTORIA
(By Air Mail—From Our Own Correspondent)
LONDON, 20th February,
Lord Ponsonby has -reminded the members of the House of Lords that lie entered their Chamber ,in ail official capacity—as n page to Queen Victoria on the last occasion of her 'opening Parliament in person 50 years ago. As a son of Sir Henry Ponsonby, long the trusted secretary and adviser of the Queen, he moved in the highest circles from his infancy, and he once told the House of Commons that the earliest playthings he could remember were red dispatch boxes. He went to Eton, and after he had become a Socialist member of the House of Commons, scandalised his party colleagues by leading the singing of the “Boat Song” at the annual dinner of Parliamentary Old Etonians. As a son-in-law of the late Sir Hubert Parry, ?he composer, he knows a good deal about music.
