PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT’S BIRTHDAY
HONOURED BY NATION (Unite'l Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright) WASHINGTON, 30th January. The nation honoured President Roosevelt’s 54th birthday to-night by giving 6000 birthday balls, which 5,000,OCO people attended. More than 1,000,000 dollars were raised for a fund to reliihilitate children crippled with infantile paralysis and to continue research work to find a cure.
The functions varied from barn dances in the backwoods, where admission was
25 cents, to ultra fashionable parties in the large social centres of the country. At the Waldorf Astoria, New York, boxes sold for 20 dollars and upward. Seventy per cent, of the proceeds will be spent in the localities where they were raised. The remainder will go to the Warm Springs Foundation (Georgia), established by the President several years ago.
