SEQUEL TO CAR SMASH
INQUEST AT TIMARU (By Telegraph—Press Association) TIMARU, This Day. The adjourned inquest was resumed touching the death of Helen Lilian McKay, single, aged 21 years, who sustained fatal injuries in a motor car. smash in the early hours of sth January. The evidence showed that John Hunter, aged 20, driver of the car had had several drinks during the evening lmt was not drunk.
Horace Stanley Rapps, piecart proprietor, said that Miss McKay and Hunter called at the piecart at 12.30 a.m. but witness could not say whether or not Hunter was fit to drive. Arthur William ITodson who arrived soon after the accident said that Hunter smelt of drink and was not in a lit state to ho in charge of a car. Dr G. R. Kingston said that the death of Miss McKay was due to laceration of the brain from a fracture of the base of the skulk In his opinion Hunter’s hehavioui was due in some degree to alcohol and shock.
