LABOUR LEGISLATION

ALTERATIONS TO BE ASKED FOR COMMITTEES HARD AT WORK Numerous alterations to the labour legislation of New Zealand will be asked for by the Trades and Labour Council in the near future (says yesterday’s “Evening Post”). Committees have been set up and are busy at the present time discussing amendments to the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, the Workers’ Compensation Act, the Shops and Offices Act, and Factories Act. Consideration is also being given to the Apprenticeship Act, but amendments to it have not yet been suggested. A meeting of union officials called by the Wellington Trades and Labour Council was held on 14th January when committees were set up to prepare amendments. On Wednesday night another large meeting of trade union executive members was held to consider proposed amendments to the I.C. and A. Act. About twenty matters which can be regarded as major amendments to the Act were adopted by the meeting, and a number of question were referred back to the committee for further consideration and redrafting. The meeting authorised the committee to meet other industrial organisations in order to finalise the proposed amendments before placing them before the Minister of Labour. • The consideration of these proposed alterations occupied the whole of the evening, and consequently suggested amendments to the Workers’ Compensation Act could not be considered. Another meeting is being arranged to consider these and if time permits at that meeting the other Acts mentioned will come under review.
