Heavy sentences have been imposed oil several officers of the ship Morro Castle, which was burned on Bth September, 1934. Executive vice-president Cabaud, of the operating company, was sentenced to one year in prison, but this was suspended on a stipulation that a 5000-(loT-lars fine be paid. The New York and Cuba Mail Steamship Company, operators of the vessel, were fined 10,000 dollars, the extreme limit provided by the Statute. When the Morro Castle, 11,520 tons, was returning to New York from a luxury cruise'to Havana, a disastrous fire occurred off tb> New* Jersey coast, some 160 deaths resulting.
