LAVA FLOW STOPPED RESULT OF BOMBING • HONOLULU, 31st December. It is now claimed Unit the bombing of the erupting volcano Manna Lou by military airmen, in ah effort to divert a gigantic How of lava which threatened the water supply of Hilo and the town itself was successful. The Government volcanologist, Dr Jagger, said to-day: “Just, 24 hours after the bombing the stoppage of the lava How began, as I expected it would. The results' arc interesting and very favourable.” The movement of the fiery stream was described as “virtually imperceptible” soon after Hilo’s civic leaders had called a mass meeting to discuss emergency action to save the water supply of the town. The molten lava earlier had flowed at the. rale of 150 to 200 feet an hour to within three miles of the Hilo water supply, and within 18 miles of the town. R cut a wide swath through the limber line at a .heat of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, destroying trees and shrubbery almost instantly.
