NONSENSE ABOUT RACE Speaking oil a motion regarding the ill-treatment of Jews in Germany, Dr. Henson, Bishop of Durham, said that one tiling which they ought to emphasise was the solidarity of civilisation. “It .is not possible for any constituent member of the civilised world to ignore, certain fundamental obligations which are involved in its membership of this civilisation,’’ lie declared. “This treatment of the Jews does violence to the fundamental conclusions which civilised humanity has reached. We, as coinheritors with the Germans of the great heritage of civilisation, desire to bring home to them that in the fervours and frenzies of their revolution they have been carried into a position which they can only maintain at the final price of excluding themselves from the fellowship of civilised peoples. The Jew's are just as mixed a race as the Germans—they could hardly he more. (Laughter and cheers.) This nonsense about race—as if there were some poison in the ancestry of Judaism which must be guarded against—is sheer hallucination and nonsense. We know in this country that the Jews can be as prominent in good citizenship as any other section of His Majesty’s subjects. We, who are children of Christendom, cannot exclude from our minds the vastness of the obligations under which we stand to the Jewish people. Our Divine Lord, according to the flesh, was a Jew. His apostles were all Jews. The Sacred Book which w'e read was a Jewish Book. It is preposterous, base and almost incredibly mean that we, the children of Christendom, should turn on the ancient people of God, to whom religiously, spiritually, morally, we owe almost every tiling we value. We can make it clear from our hearts that w'e loathe and detest this attitude which is obtaining in Germany.” fe-i.
