HOPEFUL TURN

THREATENED STRIKE BRITISH MINERS’ CLAIM SUSPENDED DECISION (British Official Wireless) (Received 10th January, 11.30 a.m.) RUGBY, 9th January. The situation arising out of the miners’ claim for a wages increase took a more hopeful turn this evening when following further discussions between the colliery owners and the miners’ representatives the executive committee of the Mineworkers' Federation met to-night and passed a resolution with the effect of delaying the decision as to the handing in of strike notices. The executive had been authorised by the delegate conference in December to order the handing in of the notices so that they should become effective on 27th January unless satisfactory proposals were made. Last night the executive informed Mr Crookghank that the proposals communicated yesterday by the colliery owners’ representatives were not satisfactory. Tonight’s decision, however, postpones the final resolve for or against strike action until a further delegates’ conference to be convened for 24th January has heard a report on the negotiations which have not yet ended, for there is to be another joint meeting between the owners and the unions’ representatives on 23rd January. No further statement was issued by either side to-day, but it is known that union officials were going to urge the owners to revise their offers with a view of making them more satisfactory. The adjournment of the discussion bo a later date and the postponement of the men’s decision gives ground for the hope that in the opinion 0 f both-sides the possibilities of reaching an agreement are not exhausted.
