THAMES TUNNEL SCHEME

A PROBABILITY JBy Air Mail—From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, 19th December. There is :i probability that London may follow Liverpool’s example, and build under the Thames a huge traffic tunnel similar to the. Mersey s successful venture that was opened by the King. The Ministry of Transport and the London Transport Board are pondering the project, which is sponsored by Mr John Murray, the eminent architect who live, years ago made the plans lor an L.C.C. bridge at Charing Cross. The contention is that the tunnel scheme would greatly relieve our central congestion in London’s traffic arteries, and that by a system of side tunnels with subterranean traffic circuses the whole problem might be cased and simplified The cost of the tunnel scheme, would be about £’20,000,000, but, judging by the Liverpool example, it might quickly pay for its construction and upkeep.
