OBITUARY
MR ARTHUR CHALLIES
An old and widely respected resident of tho Nelson district Mr Arthur Challies passed away on Monday last. The late Mr Challies was a member of the wellknown Waimea West family which has taken a very prominent part in the development there. His father, the late Mr H. W. Challies left London in the early ’fifties, and without previous experience in farming—he was engaged in business in London —took up land near the sea. coast at Appleby, previously owned by Mr Hippsley. The late Mr Arthur Challies and other members of the family were born on this farm. There was a large family of eight sons and three daughters. From time to time as the sons grew more land, including land previously held by the Redwoods, Dillions, Blundells and others was acquired and the name of Challies became very prominently identified with the whole _ district. The late Mr Challies leaves a widow and three sons, Messrs Colin, Lewis and Herbert Challies, all of Appleby. His remaining- brothers are Messrs Edgar, Alfred, H.W., James and Frank Challies, Messrs Charles and Edward Challies having predeceased him. Two sisters are also left, Mrs Raymond Hunt of Hiwipango and Miss Clara Challies of Appleby. Another sister, Mrs S Wratt, predeceased him. Mr James Challies is now a resident of Levin.
